To construct improved sanitary facilities to reduce diarrheal diseases within 20 households.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), diarrhea causes 2.2 million deaths worldwide annually, mostly in children under the age of five. In most cases, these deaths could have been prevented by access to clean and adequate sanitation. The World Health Organization (WHO) also reports that 2.5 billion people, 40% of the world’s population, do not have access to any type of improved sanitation facility.
In line with our mission to combat disease through environmental and architectural design, reducing the spread of diarrheal diseases requires interventions that promote cleaner environments and minimize disease transmission. This project will focus on improving sanitary facilities by constructing ventilated improved pit latrines in a targeted community. The ventilated improved pit latrine improves on the standard pit latrine design by allowing odors to escape, preventing flies from entering, and in many cases sealing the pit to prevent groundwater contamination.
